Fish have featured in art and science for ten thousand years.
The science of icthylogy (fish) started to gather pace in the Rennaisance. Scholars created the first printed books about fish. Guillaume Rondelet, a French professor of medicine, wrote De Piscibus Marinis in 1555. It illustrated 244 species of fish.
Fish illustration peaked in about 1600 to 1900. This was an exciting era of exploration and discovery. Scientists and artists studied and illustrated fish discoveries. Their illustrations of fish were usually printed as engravings or lithographs.
