
Roman Aviary And Water Garden. Ornithon Sive Aviariv Varronis
Titled 'Ornithon Sive Aviariv Varronis'. The famed aviary of the Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro (116 - 27 BC) in Casinum, Southern Italy was built in 64 BC. It was looted by Mark Antony's army in 47BC. Varro’s ornamental aviary was a major monument of Roman garden design. Since the sixteenth century it has fascinated architects and archaeologists.
Based on a classical Roman engraving by Pietro Santi Bartoli from the 1690s.
