Our hand finished botanical art prints are inspired by vintage botanical illustrations from the period 1600 to 1920.
Botanical art started with the crude cave drawings of stone age man, and evolved to its greatest level by the end of the 1800s, after which photography took over.
The main aim of botanical art was to accurately show plants and flowers in all their glory. The reasons for making accurate botanical art were often very practical, for example to illustrate newly discovered plants and edible and medicinal plants, and to test the skill of a still life painter. Many flower growing businesses in the 1800s employed excellent artists to illustrate their flowers to help sell them to customers throughout Europe.
