The Kelly publishing house was founded in 1799 and carried on the London tradition of publishing encyclopaedia's and similar compendia of useful information, copiously illustrated, for the growing middle class readership. The Victorian thirst for knowledge of the new lands being discovered was immense and the artists employed to illustrate them were extremely talented.
