Dinosaur and prehistoric animal fossils have been known for millennia, although their nature was a mystery. They were considered to be dragon bones in China and the the remains of giants and biblical creatures in Europe.

Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals were creatures of fantastic appearance and often enormous size. As such, they have captured the popular imagination and become an enduring part of human culture.

The art of illustrating dinosaurs and prehistoric animals requires a great imagination and a knowledge of fossils, anatomy and the fossil record.

From the mid 1850s there was an international craze for studying fossils and dinosaurs. Some wonderful illustrations of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals showed the animals in their supposed natural settings, prompting further thought about how and when these incredible and mysterious animals lived.
