Features statue of Roman god Hercules, titled "Hercules de Farnese". The Farnese Hercules is a massive marble statue, following a lost original cast in bronze through a method called lost wax casting. It depicts a muscular yet weary Hercules leaning on his club, which has his lion-skin draped over it. He has just performed one of the last of The Twelve Labours. Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek divine hero Heracles, who was the son of Zeus (Roman equivalent Jupiter) and the mortal Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is famous for his strength and for his numerous far-ranging adventures.
Based on an engraving from 1689 of statues at Versailles Palace by Simon Thomassin, which we have carefully restored and enhanced.
