John Mawe (1764 - 1829) was a British mineralogist and conchologist.
During his lifetime, shell collecting was popular as it was an era of exploration. Shells from exotic lands were eagerly sought for the curiosity cabinets of well-appointed homes.
In 1823 Mawe created one of the first shell collecting guides "Conchology". It contained beautiful hand colored lithographs of sea shells.
