Lemurs are endemic to the island of Madagascar and are named from the latin word lemures - ghosts or spirits.
Until shortly after humans arrived on the island around 2,000 years ago, there were lemurs as large as a male gorilla! Today, there are nearly 100 species of lemurs, ranging in size from 1.1 oz 20 lb. During the 18th and 19th centuries early explorers collected specimens but proper studies of the animals did not begin in earnest until the 20th century.
Our lemur art is inspired by rare vintage illustrations from the period 1600 to 1920. We make them with superb pigmented inks and heavyweight 300gsm German fine art paper made from 100% cotton and spring water.
