Louis van Houtte (1810-1876) owned the largest plant nursery in Europe. It had 50 greenhouses. He sent plant collectors to the Americas to find beautiful plants. He grew these plants for European conservatories and royalty. He created high quality botanical periodicals to advertise the plants. Their beautiful illustrations were made by his own printing office in his gardens, the Horto van Houtteano.
